What are the 3 ID verification routes for Basic, Standard and Enhanced DBS Checks?

If Digital IDv is not successful what methods of ID verification are available for DBS checks are available to me as an employer?

When the Digital IDv route cannot be performed, clients must adhere to the three-route identity checking process outlined by the DBS, ensuring that the combination of documents presented satisfies the requirements for the level of check being conducted.


Route 1 – Preferred Route

  • Who it’s for: All UK nationals.
  • What’s needed:

    • One document from Group 1 (e.g., passport, biometric residence permit, driving licence), plus
    • Two more from Group 1, 2a, or 2b (e.g., bank statements, utility bills).

Must include one document with a current address.


 

Route 2 – If Route 1 Fails (UK Residents Only)

  • When to use: If the applicant can’t provide a Group 1 document.
  • What’s needed:

    • One document from Group 2a, plus
    • Two more from Group 2a or 2b

  • PLUS: The applicant must undergo an external ID validation check via a third-party provider.


Route 3 – Only if Routes 1 & 2 Fail 

  • Last resort, only used if applicant can’t meet Routes 1 or 2.
  • What’s needed:
    • Birth certificate issued after time of birth (UK only
    • One other document from Group 2a
    • Three documents from Group 2a or 2b



Key Notes:

  • If an applicant cannot provide documents through any route, the application cannot proceed.

All documents must be originals, current (where applicable), and valid.
